What geofenced clock-in actually does
The mobile app checks the technician's GPS coordinates against the job site's address (with a typical 100m radius) and prevents the "start shift" action unless they are physically inside. Some implementations also auto-clock-out on geofence exit; we recommend you don't (more on that below).
The hidden cost of friction

- Small high-trust crews (under 5 technicians) — your founder knows when your team is working
- Emergency plumbing and HVAC — speed matters more than payroll accuracy; the wrong response is "let me retry GPS"
- Indoor-only commercial work in dense urban areas — GPS accuracy is genuinely poor; rely on Bluetooth beacons or NFC tags instead
Counter-intuitive segment
Residential cleaning — you would think geofencing helps. The data says no, because residential addresses have GPS noise of up to 30m and the false-positive rate destroys the trust relationship with crews.
The hybrid model we recommend
Most operators land here after a year: geofence-confirm, not geofence-gate. The crew can clock in from anywhere; if their GPS is outside the radius the system flags the shift for a 10-second review. False positives no longer block work, and managers still get the data they need for audits.
Tenants on the hybrid model showed 92% of the payroll-accuracy gain of strict geofencing, with 70% less crew friction in NPS surveys.
Implementation tips
- Use a generous radius (100m residential, 200m commercial multi-building)
- Allow override with a manager PIN — never trap a crew on a failure
- Log accuracy values alongside coordinates so you can tune the radius later
- Never auto-clock-out — crews step outside for materials, calls, etc.
